April is National Serger Month

April 1, 2013 in News

NationalSergerMonthBaby Lock, the brand that first brought sergers to the home sewing market and now has 14 patented serger features to its name, is declaring April 2013 as the first annual National Serger Month. This announcement comes as an effort to celebrate sergers and dispute a common fear and misunderstanding of overlock machines. Through an online awareness campaign at www.nationalsergermonth.com and in-store retailer events, Baby Lock will provide sewing enthusiasts with free serger tips, projects, and a chance to win a new Baby Lock Evolution ExtraordinAir™ Threading Serger.

Despite a widespread interest in owning a serger, many people still underestimate its value in a sewing room. Baby Lock prides itself on offering easy-to-use sergers, and felt it was time to dispel any consumer fears of these versatile machines.

“We are confident that Baby Lock sergers can provide a tension-free, easy to thread, happy serger experience and this is our way of sharing that with the sewing world,” Baby Lock Assistant Marketing Manager, McKenzie Lehmann, said.

Baby Lock hopes that the new National Serger Month will encourage all sewing enthusiasts to learn the benefits of owning a serger and join in the celebrations with their favorite machine.

How to Participate:

Many Baby Lock retailers across the nation will promote National Serger Month with special events. Sewing enthusiasts are encouraged to visit local retailers for demonstrations and special offers. Find your nearest Baby Lock retailer here.

Additionally, Baby Lock created a website at www.nationalsergermonth.com for sewing enthusiasts to collectively celebrate the month. The website will house free serger projects and link to serger tips from sewing experts such as Nancy Zieman, host of PBS show “Sewing With Nancy”, and Ellen March, editor of Sew News magazine.

Baby Lock Evolution SergerA new project will be posted every week throughout the month of April. And for those sewing history buffs, a timeline featuring the evolution of the serger will be displayed. To further promote the month, Baby Lock is also hosting a sweepstakes for sewing enthusiasts to win a Baby Lock Evolution ExtraordinAir™ Threading Serger.

Sewing enthusiasts are encouraged to celebrate National Serger Month with friends and spread the idea through social media. This is an opportune time to take photos with sergers, share inspirational projects and helpful tips on best serger practices.

Why Baby Lock?

Today Baby Lock offers a wide range of sewing, embroidery and quilting machines, but its roots are in sergers. Baby Lock got its start when a group of engineers in Japan took a chance on a new product. It was a smaller version of an industrial overlock machine or a “baby lock”.  A St. Louis-based, family-owned company saw the benefit of this new machine, and brought it to the United States. This marked the introduction of the first home serger in the U.S. market.

This new machine gave home sewing enthusiasts an opportunity to sew and finish seams like a professional.  Over the years, Baby Lock developed new technology, unseen on other sergers, and now the company has 14 patented features to its name. It makes sense that Baby Lock would celebrate the machine that started its legacy.
