Happy Cinco de Mayo

I love Cinco de Mayo, the food the drinks, but most of all, all the fun decorations. I found this great tutorial on how to ruffle crepe paper streamers at The Paper Crane. All you need rolls of crepe paper streamers in multiple colors, your sewing machine and all purpose thread.

A ruffler foot is all you need, just over lap 2 to 3 colors and sew down the middle, adding new colors as you need. The Paper Crane suggest using 12 to 15 inch strips and overlapping the ends as you go. If you only want to use a couple colors then just keep them all the roll, but make sure that you let the streamer unroll and not twist off.

If you do not have a ruffler foot, you will need to increase your upper thread tension and increase your stitch length. Making these adjustments should help ruffle the crape paper. Using 2 to 3 colors overlap the edges and stitch down the center. When you get to the end, add a new piece or color, back stitching to secure. If you do not get enough ruffle, then try feeding the streamers through a little faster or gently give your upper thread a little resistance so that the tension is a little greater. If you do not get the desired effect you can always just run a basting stitch and hand-gather.

Ruffling your paper streamers also makes them a lot stronger, so when the party is over you can roll them up and use them for the next party. Make sure that you tape any cut strings so that they don’t unravel.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!
