Meet Dana Willard!
Whether you love to sew garments, piece quilts, create home décor, or craft gifts for friends and family, you are a maker. When you take on a new project, sometimes it helps to have a little guidance. Lucky for you, there’s Dana Willard, host of MADE Everyday. Dana reaches makers across the world with her MADE Everyday online videos and her MADE blog. She now sews using Baby Lock machines and even wrote a rave sneak peek review of the new Lyric (coming this fall).
Dana started sewing when she was about 10. Her grandma taught her the mechanics and her mom taught her to read and use patterns. Dana loved sewing from the beginning, and started a little scrunchie business with her friend. “I even made a very amateur book of fabric swatches, long before I had any idea of what sample swatches were or that I’d be doing something similar as a career one day,” Dana said.
In 2012, perhaps inspired by her earlier fabric swatch book, Dana released Fabrics A-to-Z: The Essential Guide to Choosing and Using Fabric for Sewing. Fabrics A-to-Z is a sort of fabric encyclopedia for sewers. It even comes small enough to fit in a bag so you can take it with you to the fabric store. “It gives you the nitty gritty details of all types of fabric, so that you know how to sew with them. Because all too often we get caught in a cotton rut, but there’s a whole world of textiles out there! This book will help you (confidently) discover them.”
Like the book, Dana’s blog and videos uphold a similar “You can do it!” philosophy. Dana’s favorite projects are the ones she can really have fun with, and she shares that enthusiasm with her fans. She has been blogging for about seven years, and has a large following. People love Dana’s easy to follow posts and her upbeat personality. Her blog posts include tutorials and recipes as well as patterns for purchase. If you want to see what Dana has to offer, this is where to go first. She’ll cover new videos in her blog posts, too.
Dana’s videos cover multiple ways to tackle everyday projects. “MADE Everyday is a fresh new sewing show that teaches any sewer how to make cool everyday items they will love and use,” Dana explains. “It’s hard to find time in a busy day, and mine is no less busy (or messy) than yours. So I like projects that come together quickly and have big payoff.”
MADE Everyday episodes are about five to 10 minutes long and cover a variety of projects. Dana teaches her audience a new skill in each one and incorporates tons of color, music and eye candy. Her videos make projects look easy enough for sewers of all skill levels to succeed. Check out her recent Zipper 2 Ways video that totally takes the fear out of inserting a simple zipper. While there, browse the entire channel for fun tips and quick projects you’ll want to make right away. Dana’s videos are fun and easy to follow, so be prepared to want to click on every video she has. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. 🙂
After watching your favorite videos, you may be inspired to do some shopping, and find your way to a Baby Lock retailer. As a new Baby Lock sewer, Dana has learned that using a Baby Lock machine is about more than the machine itself. “I’m new to the Baby Lock family, but so far I’m loving it! And when I say “family”…it really feels like that. Whenever I meet another Baby Lock sewer, they get just as excited to tell me, ‘I have a Baby Lock too!’, and then we share stories about how much we like this feature, or that function, or how amazing the serger is, etc.”
