“Upcycled” Sweater Arm Warmers

February 24, 2011 in Projects

Maybe you’re like me, and love to thrift shop. Or maybe you have some old sweaters you love and just can’t bear to get rid of them, even though they don’t quite fit the same as they used to. Now you can reuse those old things to make a new pair of cozy, funky arm warmers. You can also use things you already have to embellish them, such as buttons, beads, etc.

Modern Cross Stitch

November 13, 2009 in Tips & Tricks

crossstitch

One of the very first crafty/sewing projects I learned do do when I was younger was cross stitch. My mom would get me those little 3″x3″ designs with it’s own little plastic frame to proudly display it in. I still love to cross stitch, especially when I am stressed. I find the rythmic motion of making each of those little “x”s relaxing and the end result it so satisfying. I really like how putting together colors you can create a pretty picture that can even include shading and has this wonderful texture with all of the thread.
While I still love the look of vintage patterns, just like any tried and true craft passed down, I was able to find a modern twist on cross stitch. Crafter Ruby Khan has made a Minipop Sampler which features all kinds movie and rock stars. Just a few featured are; Edward Scissorhands, George Lucas, Royal Tenenbaums family (my personal favorite), and Alfred Hitchcock. Visit her Flickr page and you can see all of the wonderful threaded xs in detail.

Indie Craft Movement

September 28, 2009 in General, Uncategorized

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending my first Indie Craft Fair; Strange Folks, in O’Fallon, IL.¬† What is an Indie Craft Fair you ask?¬† It’s the name given to the independent crafters that create unique items and sells them at craft fairs and at on-line gathering like etsy.com.¬† Indie Craft Fairs are part of the handmade movement.¬† I saw alot of very unique items that gave me inspiration and made want to go home and make stuff which I did!

I am always amazed at the creativity and the out of the box thinking that is expressed in these kinds of fairs.¬† It shows in the items I purchased, 2 old albums that had been molded into chip bowls.¬† Next time and indie craft fair comes to your area, don’t pass it up!

Pom-Poms!

June 8, 2009 in Find It / Buy It

Looking for a fun and unique craft for all ages to enjoy? Make pom-poms! This nifty Clover notion is fun, easy and anyone can do it — all you need is scissors, yarn, and the pom-pom maker.

When I showed them to my friends, everyone immediately thought of something different to do with them — create a wreath, string them together as a scarf, use them as zipper pulls, hang them from a cafe-rod as a modern curtain, add them to your flip-flops, use them on your Halloween costume, cat toy, etc.

What thread/yarn/string will you use to make pom-poms? What will you make from them?
