Tips for Easy Outdoor Living

May 2, 2014 in News

Hello, Hello my first Friday friends! I’m Heather from The Sewing Loft and excited to be back chatting today about all things summer!

That’s right, the long hot days of summer are right around the corner and I wanted to get those wheels turning towards your outdoor space.  This area is an extension of our living space yet so many of us forget to decorate it.  Let’s change that today and check out a few tips for easy outdoor living.

Outdoor Decorating Ideas

Ideas to infuse your style with fabric in your outdoor space.

Photos from top left clockwise:  summertime embroidery, banner bunting, shade sail, decorative pillows, grill cover, outdoor drapes, garden flag, table runner.

Let’s break it down:

  • Embroidery: Consider putting that machine to work with some simple subway art.  This can be added to a pillow or picture frame. If hand embroidery is more your speed, try incorporating fun colors and different stitches to keep the project fun and fresh!
  • Having a BBQ?  Why not stitch together some easy party decorations.  Banner buntings are easy to make and a great way to clear out left over scraps.
  • Hang a shade sail for extra sun protection between your favorite trees.  Sail shades can be made in all different shapes and sizes. Just pick a few high points to hang your fabric from and enjoy your new found shade.
  • Decorative pillows and cushions are an easy way to brighten up your space.  Special trims, custom piping and monograms can really add that luxurious feel.
  • Don’t forget that grill! That’s right even the grill needs a cover so why not make it pretty or maybe the “grill master” of the house needs a new apron.
  • Consider adding outdoor drapes to soften hardscapes.  They can simple pocket curtains hung from a dowel rod or get fancy and add over sized eyelets with tie back tassels.
  • Garden flags are the perfect way to mark that special occasion.
  • Don’t forget your table-scape for that next event.  Consider layering handmade quilts as the table cloth with a simple fabric runner.  Add matching napkins and rings for that perfect place setting.

So, now that I’ve got your wheels turning are you ready to embrace  your outdoor space?  If so, I’d love to know what you’ll be working on.  Feel free to leave me a comment below or stop by to share a quick picture on Facebook.

Thanks so much for having me.  I’ll be back next month sharing something fun to keep your needles moving!
