Welcome Lindsay, the Cottage Mama!
September 26, 2012 in Stitchin Women
Today we welcome Lindsay Wilkes, founder of The Cottage Home, to the Totally Stitchin’ community. Lindsay was born in San Francisco, California and lived there until she moved to Houston, Texas at age 13. In 2001, she moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend DePaul University, and has been in the area ever since.
In 2004, Lindsay married her high-school sweetheart, Brett, and they currently live in the Chicago suburbs raising their three children, Savannah (4 years old), Matilda (3 years old), and Caspian (1 year old) in a 1934 cottage-style home.
Lindsay’s children are her biggest inspiration—in fact, she started The Cottage Home blog, not long after her second daughter Matilda was born. “Through my blog I am able to share my passion for cooking, sewing, crafting and all things domestic,” Lindsay said. “I opened the etsy shop [The Cottage Mama] about four months after I started the blog.” As the popularity of her blog grew, Lindsay decided to release two printed sewing patterns. “I prefer to create one-of-a-kind pieces. I like to make a pattern and let people use it the way they want to.”
When it comes to fashion, Lindsay is inspired by vintage fashion, i.e. classic silhouettes for little girls from the 30s, 40s, and 50s. “I come up with a silhouette I want to create and try to select fabric to bring that silhouette to life.” She often pairs modern, printed fabrics with these classic silhouettes to create original pieces.
Lindsay’s newest book is scheduled to release October 2013, and Baby Lock is the proud machine sponsor. “I am looking forward to working with Baby Lock and have been thrilled with the machines they have provided me to work on. They really are such a dream.”
Additionally, Lindsay will be teaching at the Martha Pullen School of Fashion in February 2013 and filming several new episodes for Martha Pullen Television.
