Diane’s Favorite Sewing Book

April 15, 2012 in Find It / Buy It, Tips & Tricks

While spring cleaning, I found myself bored with the same look and color in my living room. A great way to change colors without spending a fortune on new furniture is to bring new color into the room with pillows. I found a book called “Simply Pillows by the Editors of Sunset Books and found many different styles that would be easy to make with easy to follow directions. This book had a lot of great ideas.

Shop for fabric online?

February 9, 2012 in Find It / Buy It, General, Sewing supplies

Do you shop online for fabric? If so, where? I would like to sew a new swimsuit this season, so, I am currently in the market for cute print swimsuit fabric, which isn’t the easiest to find! I am still early in my search, but, I stumbled upon this article I read awhile back from Threads Magazine’s website (which is where the picture above came from as well), “Online Shopping and Resource Guide.”

They have many many fabric stores listed!! I’m sure there are even more than listed, but, it’s nice to have a place to reference new stores rather than searching through a search engine! If you have a favorite online fabric store, let us all know!!! I, for one, would love to check it out!

Update! Found some cute swimwear fabric on etsy…just bought this (click picture for link)…

Can’t wait!! Stay posted for the end product!! :D

Also, I thought this swim fabric was interesting too, also from etsy (click picture for link)

www.AmazingDesigns.com Gets an Update

July 29, 2011 in Find It / Buy It

The embroidery design company has put a great effort into the redesign of their website, making it easy to search for and download single designs, collections and software. It is much faster as well and boasts features such as a user rating system and a wish list. If you haven’t checked it out yet click here and take a gander. They have also started sending out e-newsletters again which was halted due to complications with the old site. Register on the site if you would like to start¬†receiving¬†updates from www.AmazingDesigns.com.

Loving The Freebie

February 17, 2011 in Find It / Buy It, General, Tips & Tricks

I can say without hesitation that I love, LOVE free stuff. I am a sucker for a BOGO (buy one, get one) and I feel giddy when a gift with purchase comes my way. I must confess that sometimes for me, a free embroidery design can be better then roses and a box of chocolates!¬† Okay…maybe not that good…but right up there.

I have found free designs offered from so many different websites, and I like to try these freebies before buying other designs from new sites. I also like to stitch out a sample before using a free design on my projects. This way I get to know the design quality and get a feel for the way the design was created.  In addition, I feel better about purchasing designs from sites that offer freebies that allow me to try before I buy.

I have been only collecting these innocent pleasures for a little over four years now, and I have built up quite a collection. In the beginning I downloaded any free design I could find, weather or not it was something that I even liked. Now, I am a little more selective and I like to keep everything organized using my Designer’s Gallery StudioPlus software. I love how it allows me to view my designs without importing them into other design software packages, or transferring them to my Baby Lock embroidery machine. I am also able to catalog designs, so that I no longer waste time searching for that one perfect design.

One of my favorite sites is Amazing Designs at http://amazingdesigns.com/en/downloads/free-designs/. Each month they offer two new free designs and have a varied selection. I am sure you will be able to find a design that will fit with a project you have wanted to create.  You can also find some great freebies at Urban Threads and Embroidery Library.

We would love for you to share, where do you go for your freebies?

Make Your Own Clothes!

October 25, 2010 in Find It / Buy It, General

I have to admit, I’m always amazed when I compliment someone on something they’re wearing and they reply with, “Oh, I made this.” My jaw can’t help but hit the ground and I’m completely in aw.

While browsing the web, I ran across this book, Make Your Own Clothes. It’s as if the sky parted, a beam of light shined down and a voice spoke to me saying, “Kendra, you should look into this!” So, here I am, inspired and knowing more than before and daring to make something.

Make Your Own ClothesIf you know the feeling, check out Make Your Own Clothes. Each project includes easy-to-follow instructions and step-by-step full color photography for key stages. All patterns featured in the book are included in the accompanying PatternMaker CD (all you have to do is enter your measurements). What could be easier! Hopefully you’ll be as inspired as I.

Beginning Quilting

September 21, 2010 in Find It / Buy It, General, Projects

The first quilt I actually made was the Log Cabin by Eleanor Burns from her “Quilt in a Day” series.¬†This is an easy first quilt because it’s all pieced using strips of fabric and your rotary cutter. The best part is that you really can put it together in a day, giving you fast results.¬†That’s important when you’re a beginner! Kathy Brodock of Teaching Good Things has a great DVD on quilting. I’d also recommend it for anyone wanting a good starting project!
