Save a Little on Machine Embroidery Stabilizer!

December 3, 2011 in General, Tips & Tricks

My favorite stabilizer to use while embroidering with my Baby Lock Esante is the kind that you can hoop and stick your fabric to and then it tears away…like, this: Stik-Tear, Tear-Away Stabilizer! I LOVE being able to hoop only the stabilizer and then positioning and sticking my item-to-be-embroidered right on the stabilizer (especially when I’m working with onesies or a class full of students when hooping needs to be quick)! So, I thought, to save a little bit on stabilizer, I’d do the following: after I have embroidered once, I carefully tear away my project, creating what it would look like below.

After, I have torn away my design from the stabilizer, I then cut a small square to place over the hole, as shown below.

I cover the hole and peel away the sticky, so that I can use it once more and it works fabulously! I wouldn’t recommend using this trick on all projects or really more than once, but it’s a handy little trick for simple projects! 2 of those cut out squares equals one entire 5 x 7 hoop sheet; so, for every 2 things you embroider, you save one sheets worth! :D

Halloween Sewing Tip 2

Decorative edge rotary bladeRotary cutters are great for cutting out costumes quickly. A rotary cutter with a pinking or wave blade is often enough of a seam finish you could need.

Summertime Blues

June 21, 2011 in General

Every year, as the days grow longer and the temperature rises, thousands of quilters brush the stray fibers from their clothes and leave their sewing stations to bask in warmth of Summer. Whether you head out to spend time in your garden, enjoy barbecues with friends or set off on an annual family vacation, time away from your beloved machine can be crushing. Many summer activities take place away from your house in locations that don’t lend themselves well to quilting. Lugging that machine on a family camping trip is out of the question. Where will you cut fabric at the beach?

If you’re in need of a quilting fix but not willing to give up socializing and mobility, I have a suggestion. Crocheted Quilts.

Many popular quilt patterns have been written out into crochet patterns that are free online. Packing a few skeins into a bag with a hook and printed instructions will provide you with an easy project that won’t take up much space and was practically made to travel. Take it poolside, on the road or even to a ball game on a stitch n’ pitch night. You’ll find it easy to converse over and since all of the pieces are assembled at the end of the project, it’s easy to only work on small pieces at a time.

It probably won’t work as a replacement, but it might ease you through some Summertime blues.

Here are a few of the patterns that I found:

Quilters Unite for a Cause

May 20, 2011 in General

I recently attended the American Quilters Society quilt show in Paducah, KY. For the past several years I’ve been volunteering at the Quilts for Love booth during the show. The booth is set up with machines and supplies provided by Babylock and fabric and batting donated by Calico Country. It gives attending quilters the chance to sit down and sew for charity. They can sew as much or as little as they like and when the show is over all of the finished quilts are donated to a specific charity. In the past the booth has partnered up with Project Linus. This year it was paired with Anna’s Quilts, a charity that distributes quilts to children with cancer at Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis. This is an amazing project!

Fabric Rolls

The great folks at Calico country pre-cut and rolled coordinating fabrics and batting so as soon as the quilters arrived they were ready to go. All of the quilts were assembled using a quilt as you go method on Babylock Enlighten sergers.

Wait, you didn’t know you could quilt on a serger?! You can, and it is so fast and easy! It’s a great method for large projects that you would like to get through quickly. I’ve pieced a king size log cabin quilt top together in six hours before on a serger. They’re wonderful things! We were able to finish the quilts on the sergers using the Wave stitch along their outside edges.

Quilts in Progress

Over the course of the quilt show, with the help of hundreds of quilting hands, we were able to complete 29 quilts! A huge thanks to all of the wonderful ladies that stopped by to sew a few seams. I know that all of your work will be greatly appreciated!

Fabric Sharing

May 12, 2011 in General

Are you working on a sewing project that requires many different fabrics such as a quilt or maybe it’s a cute little dress for your little girl? Many times when cutting out you fabrics I find myself tossing the scraps… well do not throw them away but donate these fibers to your locale animal rescue or animal shelter. These simple donations help keep the animals clean and comfortable before they are adopted. By this simple contribution, you will bring a smile to the shelter and all of the animals that live there.
